Author Visits
1. I share about having dyslexia, learning to read and write, and discovering the world of books. I talk about my stories, the writing techniques I use, and then we use all use those techniques to create some wonderful stories. As an illustrator I encourage kids to draw and I take them through some simple shapes to get ideas of characters down. Even reluctant writers and drawers will find the work achievable and fun.

- “I really enjoyed seeing the author help the students to consider their settings, characters and plot.”

- “I have a student in my class who is a very reluctant writer, and she wouldn’t go out to recess when the bell went because she said there was just too many story ideas, and she needed to write them all down right away. That was amazing!”
- June 2016 update: This child, who before the visit would barely write a paragraph, has now completed four pages of a story, with plans of a second chapter.
- Megan was informative and entertaining, and offered fantastic writer’s advice for our grade 6 students. She helped our students to tap into their imaginations and find inspiration for stories. Thank you!

- It was wonderful for the students to see a real author use the same strategies we try and teach them in class. Using our senses was a great strategy that I believe really helped the students feel like they created a realistic character. We have used this technique to create our own characters in our Writer’s Notebooks. The session has also helped me create better Modelled Writing mini lessons for my students. I would definitely recommend Megan and hope she comes to visit us again in the near future!
- Megan’s presentation was well organized and the students were engaged. I liked that they were involved and were participating in creating the character/problem/solution/setting/etc. I would definitely recommend Megan to other schools, the kids were excited to have a real life author and were interested in learning about her.
- I would definitely recommend Megan to other schools. The students were very excited to listen to her and to read her story.
- “My kids absolutely enjoyed their sessions and were keen to 'relaunch' our writing time tomorrow.
- It was refreshing to see presenters that are more substance than polish and are locals. The kids were able to identify with them because of this.
- One observation was my *Sally. She is a clever and talented student in Literacy but her quirky and off centre nature helps alienate her from her peers. Megan is Sally in 15 years time, and it was fantastic to see her captivated and her 'way of thinking' valued. From conversations I've had since, many of my kids have a new appreciation for 'Sallyisms’ and that being a little strange is okay.”

- “I was in awe of them both (Ester, the illustrator, and Megan), and am able to take away some strategies from your author and implement them into my star program with a couple of my kids. She made it look simple with her planning, and I was interested to hear that she has had some struggles herself with her learning. It was very inspiring and I would like it if you could pass on my comments to the girls.”
Tanjil South Primary School - whole school reading 'Raymund and the Fear Monster' and Q and A.
